President’s Column

It’s the middle of March of 2010, and the beginning of a new decade and Leadership Fort Worth’s recruitment season for the Leadership Class of 2011.  Let’s make a resolution that the next decade for Leadership Fort Worth will be even better than the one before!

This resolution can be accomplished in part with just a phone call from each of you to that energetic man or woman (mid-30’s and up)whom you know would enhance and be enhanced by going through the Leadership Class.  When you call, be ready to tell them what they can expect.  Here’s my story.

When I moved to Fort Worth in 1997, I did not know many people.  Being from another state and not having gone to school in Texas, it would not have been surprising if had not “connected” with Fort Worth.  However, the stars lined up for me one day in 1998 when a friend told me about Leadership Fort Worth.  I applied, was accepted and became a member of the Class of 1999. From that experience I attribute many of the wonderful things that have happened in my life – to follow are just a few examples.

First, in an indirect sort of way, is my husband, Tom.  No, we didn’t meet at a Leadership Fort Worth event, but we were equally impressed with one another upon learning during one of our first conversations that we were both members!

Second, a classmate provided the endorsement for me to interview for (and subsequently get) my first job with a Fort Worth law firm.  I have so enjoyed practicing law in Fort Worth. In fact, each time I have to deal with a Dallas attorney I realize that the “Fort Worth Way” is the only way.

Finally, the insight and skills that I acquired from going through the program have been invaluable. Because of them, I have become active on numerous non-profit boards and have inspired and participated in meaningful discussions and actions that have helped to make our City safer, more cultural, and progressive.

Thank you for your continued support.  Without interest from all of you, the organization would not be what it is today.  Applications for the Class of 2011 will be available through  April 16.  Please think about that dynamic colleague, friend, or neighbor to nominate to become part of the Leadership Fort Worth family.
