From the Executive Director
Last week I sent an email to the LFW board and thought I would say thank you to one of our VPs for an especially creative initiative. And then I thought of another VP who was working extremely hard to make some good things happen -- and then another -- and another! Your LFW board is doing a terrific job! Let me say a word of thanks in this column to some of these great folk:

From the Board President
Liz Thornton
Your LFW is hard at work! Committees and task forces are launching the new young adult program, marketing our organization, enhancing member communications, impacting LeaderKids’ participants, planning curriculum, developing alumni activities and preparing national events of interest for you. Recently LFW’s past presidents were honored at a reception where we gained from their insights and commitment to LFW as well as updated them on the Leading Edge. Your board has selected Erma Johnson Hadley as the 2009 Community Leadership Association’s Distinguished Leadership Award winner for LFW. Join me in honoring and recognizing Erma for the leadership she has provided to Fort Worth for more than 30 years. Also, we owe a big thanks to two board members who recently resigned. Lee Rogers served five years on the board but resigned to focus on his business that is expanding into state and national arenas. Jan Titsworth joined our board last year but left to take on responsibilities as our LFW Program Director.

But who decides what makes a leader “great”? If you ask ten different people you likely will receive ten different answers. Nevertheless, here’s my take on three attributes, of many, that make a great leader:

LeaderKids Fort Worth launches 14th year with Orientation at TCU

LeaderKidsOn Tuesday, October 14, the LeaderKids Fort Worth Class of 2009 met for the first time this school year at the TCU Recreation Center. Thanks to Omar Torres of the TCU Leadership Development Center, each LeaderKid will have a TCU Mentor this school year, in addition to a LFW Mentor. The TCU Mentors, under the direction of TCU student leader Addi Hall, organized the afternoon’s agenda: icebreakers, games, orientation, small group discussions, and a campus tour complete with cameras. Afterward, the students and mentors enjoyed dining in a private dining room at the new University Union.
